With a three-way tie atop the Catholic High School League standings for regular-season dual meets, it would seem that the league swimming and diving championship would be up for grabs. But University of Detroit Jesuit blitzed the rest of the field to win its first title since 1971. The Cubs won eight of the 12 events, including all three relays, to top the field with 545 points. Four-time defending champion Detroit Catholic Central was runner-up with 420, while Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood (330.5) finished third. Jesuit set a school record by winning the 200 freestyle relay in 1:26.15. Drew Collins and Charlie Bruce, who swam on that relay, each figured in four first-place finishes for the team. Collins won the 200 and 100 freestyle races (1:42.09, 46.54) and swam a leg on the 400 free relay (3:12.05). Bruce won the 50 free (21.38) and the 100 butterfly (50.32) and contributed to the 200 medley relay (1:35.97). Christian Bouchillon was UDJ’s other winner, taking the backstroke (50.17) -- a race in which his brother, Jordan, finished second. Boasting 15 state qualifiers, the Cubs

also had the depth to match their strength -- they had at least three place-winners in the championship heat of five individual events. Runner-up Catholic Central had three individual winners: Jason Per in one-meter diving (417.60 points), Logan Paxton in the 500 freestyle (4:55.92) and Luke Mychalowych in the 100 breaststroke (59.05). Warren De La Salle Collegiate’s Max Swiatkowski won the individual medley (1:56.40).
